Progress University: A Journey of Resilience and Progress in Gyumri (1990-Present)
Humble Beginnings (1990-1995):
The year is 1990, and Gyumri, still reeling from a devastating earthquake, witnesses the birth of hope in the form of Progress University. Founded as a branch of Yerevan Progress-Engineering Economic and Legal University, it was a small beacon in a city yearning for rebuilding, not just infrastructure, but also its future workforce.
Challenges were plenty. The university initially operated on a rental basis in a secondary school building with a mere 108 students enrolled in Law and Economics programs. The professorial staff was cobbled together, inviting experienced specialists from Gyumri’s state universities and Yerevan. But amidst the difficulties, a spirit of determination took root.
Within a short period, the university secured two wooden buildings, demonstrating its commitment to creating its own educational base. This allowed them to move away from the rented space and conduct the second semester of the 1990-91 academic year in their own facility. Collaboration became a key strategy. Progress University fostered close ties with Yerevan University of Economics and Law, Gyumri State Universities, and even universities in Russia, exchanging programs and expertise. This spirit of cooperation proved invaluable in the formative years.
Building a Legacy (1995-2000):
By 1995, Progress University had earned its independent status and a new name – Economic and Legal University. This period also saw significant growth. A crucial step came with the acquisition of a 3-story building on Tbilisi Highway. Renovated and adapted for educational purposes, this complex became the cornerstone of the university. This period also saw the addition of new specialties like Journalism, Foreign Language, and Chemistry-Biology, reflecting a broader academic vision.
The year 1996 marked another milestone – the establishment of a medical college offering programs in midwifery, nursing, dental technology, and pharmacy. This expansion not only served the growing healthcare needs of the region but also solidified Progress University’s position as a comprehensive educational institution. The university didn’t stop there. Construction projects flourished, resulting in a gymnasium, a two-story hotel for visiting professors, a dental clinic, and a spacious meeting hall. These facilities underscored the university’s commitment to providing a well-rounded learning environment.
Modernization and Recognition (2000-2010):
The turn of the millennium ushered in a new era of focus on quality and international alignment. The university undertook a comprehensive review of its curriculum, aligning it with the educational standards set by the Ministry of Education and Science. This period also saw the establishment of a base school, providing valuable practical experience for future educators.
A defining moment arrived in 2001 when Progress University successfully completed the state accreditation process for its undergraduate programs. This was a testament to the university’s commitment to high academic standards. The following years saw the accreditation of most of its specialties, further solidifying its reputation.
Progress University embraced international trends by implementing a credit system aligned with the Bologna Declaration. The legal clinic, funded by USAID and coordinated by the American Bar Association, offered free consultations to underprivileged citizens of the Shirak region. Additionally, the university became the sole private institution entrusted by the Civil Council of the Republic to train civil servants for the Shirak region.
